Welcome to the 2015 winter edition of Pigeonhole Magazine!

As you’ll read in our regular column, ‘Move’, teachers experience winter in their own unique way. Even though the days are shorter, the sun doesn’t always shine through and it’s possibly a little harder to get moving in the mornings, winter has its upside in that it can encourage us to take stock. A little bit of hibernation never hurt anyone so think about slowing down where you can and taking the time to reflect with a trusted mentor.

Also in this edition, we’re very excited to present an interview with John Marsden, author extraordinaire and now principal of Candlebark School, which he established nearly 10 years ago. Inspirational in both roles, he reflects on his early years of teaching and shares his unique perspective.

Additionally, we have reprinted an interview we did with Dr Ian Mitchell last year about the PEEL Program, founded at Monash University 30 years ago and home to a database of some of the most rigourously tried and tested teaching strategies around. Many of them can be used in either a primary or secondary context. If you haven’t heard of it or checked it out; now’s the time - how every PST or ECT doesn’t know about this resource is beyond us. The link is at the end of the interview.

Most importantly, however, we’d like to welcome Jesica Harvey to the Pigeonhole Magazine team as Co-Editor! Jessica is an early career teacher herself and passionate about the issues surrounding both pre-service teachers and graduates and acts as our ear-to-the-ground on Twitter and Facebook.

Enjoy your read and let us know what you think.
